The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show aired today and all of the promotion lived up to the hype. There was glamour, flashy sets, energetic music and more diverse models than have ever hit the runway in the company’s history. You had curvy models, women with natural hair, ladies in their senior years, and women from different cultures and backgrounds.
Victoria’s Secret aired its last fashion show in 2018 before putting the event on hiatus to focus on reevaluating the company’s culture and values. The vow to restructure the brand’s image came after internal and public complaints that the company’s beauty standards didn’t match what real women’s bodies look like today.
I think the six year hiatus served the company well. Though I do have to mention Rihanna’s Savage X Fenty Fashion Show which launched in 2019 and gained popularity for the lingerie brand’s marketing of inclusive sizing, diverse models, engaging musical performances and celebrity appearances. The Savage X Fenty show last aired in November 2022 and had novel entertainment, as can be expected from a founder who gained her start as a musical performer. With that program gaining such a large audience over the past years, it was nice to see Victoria’s Secret take a similar modern approach in its creative direction, yet keep its world renowned and iconic branding.
Victoria’s Secret has always been about creating a fantasy and selling that vision to women to take home and make it their own. The 2024 show created that familiar dreamy atmosphere and expanded it to include more models with a variety of bodies. At the time of viewing on YouTube during the premiere, 2.1 million viewers watched live at home (not including other platforms where it streamed) and gained a sense of nostalgia as their favorite VS Angels like Adriana Lima, Alessandra Ambrosio, Doutzen Kroes and Tyra Banks strutted down the runway. New supermodels like Paloma Elsesser, Imaan Hammam and Ashley Graham also graced the catwalk. As musicians Tyla, Lisa, Orianthi and Cher performed on stage, women and men at home could see the absolute power in owning confidence no matter your dress size, hair texture, skin color or age. Is there room for improvement and even more diverse representation? Of course. Was this a great start after six years? Absolutely.
