5 Things I Learned About Trees This Month

I recently went on a canopy crawl in downtown Savannah. It’s a tour led by local arborists who teach you about native and non-native trees in Savannah, Georgia while walking around the scenic city. It was fabulous. Here are five takeaways I took from the tour.

  1. Palm Trees are not actually categorized as trees. They have a fibrous trunk, and as they age, they don’t develop rings around the diameter each year. That’s why they’re so easy to plant in narrow spaces, because they don’t root the same way that trees do.
  2. Crepe Myrtles are not native to Savannah but they do grow well here.
  3. There are different types of Magnolia trees.
  4. Mistletoe is actually a parasitic plant.
  5. This one may be obvious, but the iconic Live Oaks in the area have been there longer than most streets downtown. And the roots are usually as wide as the branches. That’s why sometimes you might see cracks in the asphalt, because the roots are sprawling underneath.

I look forward to learning even more about native and non-native plants in the area.
